Breville JE98XL Review: Fountain Plus Juice Extractor

The Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus 850-Watt Juice Extractor is the next step up in price from the cheapest Breville juicer option, the BJE200XL. Still definitely entry level in cost, this model features more versatility in speed and capacity, whilst not letting up in terms of pure raw power.

With more and more people realizing the benefits of juicing, the Breville JE98XL has quickly become a customer favorite. So with this review, it’s worth having a more in depth look at this juicer to understand what the fuss is all about, and a few other things you should know before you buy.

Design & Features

The Breville JE98XL juicer is centrifugal in design and is powered by an 850 watt motor, up from the 700 watt motor found in the

It’s interesting to note that while it’s backed by more power, its max RPM is actually lower than that model, having a max speed of 12,000 RPM, compared to 14,000 RPM in the BJE200XL.

In real world use, however, you definitely won’ t notice this slower speed. And as it’s backed by more horsepower, it can maintain its max speed easier when juicing harder fruits and vegetables, like apples or carrots. A slight dip in speed was audible in the BJE200XL in such instances, but it’s less pronounced here.

One main feature the JE98XL offers that its little brother doesn’t, is its variable speed setting. At the flick of a switch you can cut the RPM down to 6,500, almost half. Why would you want to do that? Slower RPM is actually better for softer fruits and vegetables, like leafy greens, which the cheaper option sometimes struggled with. In fact Breville recommends this setting for quite a lot of produce, such as grapes, kiwi fruit, mangoes, tomatoes and watermelon.

The other area this juicer differs is in its pulp catching mechanism, and hence its footprint as well. While the BJE200XL had its pulp catcher stored internally, the JE98XL adopts a more traditional external location, that is seen in the majority of Breville’s juicer lineup. 1.1 qt (1 L) in size, this obviously allows for more pulp volume to be collected in between cleaning, but the compromise is it takes up more counter space. So it’s worth considering your needs in these areas.

Performance & Efficiency

Make no mistake, the Breville JE98XL is a juicing powerhouse. No matter what’s thrown at it (not literally of course!), at its full speed setting, it simply decimates it. Carrots and beet vanish in a matter of seconds. A slight slowdown is audible but negligible in terms of juicing speed, and it quickly regains momentum. For an entry level juicer this is very impressive.

This speed sometimes backfires on you though – some juice splatter can come from the chute as produce is dropped in, so it’s recommended to quickly cover the chute just in case. It’s a compromise for the chute’s convenient large size, so it’s excusable. The JE98XL is a very stable juicer in spite of its speed, however, and this was also found to help its noise levels, which are noticeably quieter than other brands at similar speeds.

Turning the dial down, as previously mentioned, the juicer’s low speed setting is better suited for extracting juice from softer fruits and vegetables, like cantaloupes, and leafy greens, such as spinach. For a centrifugal juicer it does an admirable job at leafy greens, though the resulting pulp isn’t as dry as from a masticating juicer, and it can be difficult to make the machine cooperate. If you want to juice wheatgrass or other grasses exclusively, you may be better off with a .

At the end of the day though, for the majority of produce, the Breville JE98XL leaves you with pulp that is almost dry to the touch. Be it apples, oranges, strawberries, carrots, celery, rhubarb, cucumbers – you name it. This is a very quick and efficient juicer that really gets the juice – and hence nutrients – out.

Ease of Use

The Breville JE98XL juicer’s extra large 3″ chute allows you to simply drop in whole fruit and vegetables a majority of the time. Apples for example, as long as they’re not too big, don’t even need to be cut.

The juicer’s parts are easy to put together and take apart, and in terms of cleaning, are dishwasher safe. A good tip is to put a plastic bag in the pulp collector before juicing. When you’re done, simply tie up the bag and throw it out – one less thing to wash! Though it is always good to send it to the compost heap instead.

Controls are a simple matter of Off, High, and Low, so operation couldn’t be any easier. Be aware of the juicer’s vertical height though. At 16-1/2″ it’s worth taking into consideration where you’re going to store it, to ensure that it will fit. If space is a concern, consider the BJE200XL review as well.
